Richard Nyamah, a former Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to summon former party chairman Freddie Blay over what he describes as a deliberate and dangerous attempt to support a third term presidential bid for President John Dramani Mahama.

Nyamah accused Blay of ‘undermining Ghana’s constitutional democracy’ and ‘setting the stage’ for the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to test the limits of presidential tenure through legal manipulation.

In a strongly worded statement released Wednesday, he described Blay’s remarks as ‘selfish and questioned the former chairman’s motives.

“Whatever he gains from setting this agenda to have JM bid for a third term is personal. As a lawyer, he is aware of the diction in the Constitution. There is no wriggle room for such an agenda,” Nyamah stated.

The former Deputy Communication Director raised concern over the current political landscape, citing President Mahama’s nomination of seven new Supreme Court justices and the recent dismissal of the Chief Justice.

“The political atmosphere seems right for an attempt to be made to change the Constitution. Freddie Blay’s comments make it easy for the NDC to bring a case for constitutional interpretation on the tenure of office of the President,” he warned.

Nyamah formally addressed his concerns to the NPP’s current National Chairman and General Secretary, urging them to act immediately.

“I am calling upon them to convene an emergency NEC meeting and summon Freddie Blay to explain himself. His position is not just an affront to the ideology of the party but to the tenets of our constitutional democracy.”

He emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Our democracy is not safe with comments like this. This is an opportunity for NEC to prove that no one is above the law and the party.”
