The Member of Parliament (MP) for Garu constituency has condemned the recent military brutalities that occurred in the Garu and Tempane constituencies, where innocent residents were assaulted and robbed by soldiers.
Albert Alalzuuga Akuka made a statement on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, November 1, calling for urgent government intervention and a parliamentary probe into the matter.
He expressed concern at how the military officers brutalized and maimed the residents, adding that this incident was one of many barbaric and inhumane actions carried out by the men in uniform on civilians whom they ought to protect.
According to him, he had not been able to get any answers regarding the number of residents who were arrested by the soldiers, their whereabouts, and the charges against them.
“This is an unacceptable violation of our citizens’ rights, and as a matter of urgency, I am strongly calling and demanding an immediate government intervention to address this issue and also for Parliament to open a probe into this matter, and bring a comprehensive resolution to it,” he said.
The Garu MP appealed to the Speaker of Parliament to use his good offices to ensure that justice is served to the victims of the military brutalities.
He also urged his fellow MPs to join him in condemning the incident and demanding accountability from the military authorities.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, 29th October 2023, has sparked outrage and condemnation from various civil society groups and human rights activists, who have called for an independent investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators.
