The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have firmly denied allegations that they have threatened to take over control of the country if the upcoming 2024 elections turn violent.

This response comes after a publication attributed such claims to Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey, Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG).

In a press release issued on Friday, August 23, 2024, GAF clarified that they have never held any press conference declaring an intention to stage a coup.

The statement emphasised that GAF’s role is to support the Ghana Police Service upon request and that this support does not equate to an overthrow of the government.’

Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director General of Public Relations, stated, “GAF has no intention to stage a coup and will prevent and resist any individual, group, or organization seeking to unlawfully take over the power of government, either acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency.”

The press release also called on civil society groups and the media to refrain from using GAF’s name to heighten political tension. GAF urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for the upcoming elections in December 2024.

GAF reiterated their commitment to peace and tranquillity, encouraging all citizens to feel free and safe to undertake their lawful activities.
