The Ghana National Federation of Persons with Disabilities (GFPD), has expressed concern about the on-going post-election violence, and act of lawlessness in the country.

Such violence, it said, has the potential to increase the number of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and thereby, affect the nation’s human resource base and slow down development processes.

Miss Mahamadu Sirina, the National Vice President of the Federation, advised political parties to call their followers to order, and asked the police to be expeditious in their investigations and bring the perpetrators to book.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Ms Sirina said though the country had sailed through peaceful elections, the acts of lawlessness and reprehensive behaviours going-on could plunge the nation into chaos and disorder.

She advised all Ghanaians to cherish and help preserve the prevailing peace of the nation, and asked the security services to be proactive enough and protect state properties and individual lives.

Ms Sirina said PwDs, women, girls, children and other people with vulnerabilities suffered the brunt of political instability and chaotic society, and entreated political party followers to be mindful of their behaviours that could destabilise the nation in the aftermath of the general elections.

“You know well that because of our vulnerabilities, we can’t run, swim or jump when there is political turmoil,” she stated, and called for calm for the nation to go through peaceful transition of political power in January, 2025.

“The reprehensive behaviours of attacking each other, acts of vandalism and destruction of state properties will only worsen our situation and draw back development,” Ms Sirina stated.

She said dialogue remained the surest way to tackle emerging issues of misunderstanding in the political space.
