Private legal practitioner Mr Martin Kpebu has called for a debate on the current nature of Ghana’s democracy.

In his view, the current system where so much power is concentrated in the hands of one person, the President, is not helpful to the development of the country.

Speaking on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday January 14 while commenting on the controversial music video shot by American rapper Meek Mill at the Jubilee House, he said “There is anger, so everything that we do people will not be happy about. That tells the president to look at his posturing. Almost everything has gone down apart from the free SHS so the little thing people pounce on the president.

“His intransigence, he won’t listen to anybody, is leading him to this. I don’t know how he is going to regain the confidence of the people. This model of our democracy is not helping, we have concentrated too much power into one hand.”

Regarding the music video, he stated that a part of him felt that it was right to project Ghana to the world through the video but another part of him also went with the view of security experts who raised concerns against it.

The rapper has however apologized for the controversial music video.

In a tweet, Meek Mill said, “my apologies to the people if any disrespected. We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa.. What I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon. My apologies to the office [of the President] also”.

He has since deleted the video.

This followed the backlash he and the Ghanaian government have received in response to the video.

For instance, North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said government officials who were responsible for this act should be sacked.

Mr Ablakwa described the situation as a despicable desecration of the seat of government.

Commenting on Facebook, Mr Ablakwa said “All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately.

“How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively?

“Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high security installation?”

Civil Society activist, Dr Steve Manteaw also indicated on Facebook that “This is how low and cheap it gets. Another first for Ghana. I shiver to think about the security implications.”

The rapper has accordingly, removed the video from his social media pages.

The video clip popped up on social media on Sunday, January 8.

Meek Mill visited Ghana and performed at the AfroNation concert on Thursday, December 29, 2022.
