GOD’S WORD – OUR MEDITATION AND WORDS

Scripture Reading: Psalm 19

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

We end our study of Psalm 19 with two things we must do with the Word of God.

  1. We must meditate on the Word of God. To meditate means to think deeply about something. It is similar to how cows break down their food for digestion. They first eat the grass while on their feet and later lie down to chew again on what has been eaten. Similarly, after we have read the Bible or listened to an explanation of the Bible, we must spend time to chew the cud.

The meditation of our heart, therefore, is when we quietly consider the Word of God and ponder over how it applies to us. Though, it is ideal to do this kind of meditation alone and in a quiet place, it can also be done while driving or sitting in a bus to and from work. If you should meditate on the word while driving, please stay alert on the road and be fully engaged in your driving.

Christian meditation is not focusing on an object and projecting with the object. No, that kind is neither Christian nor Biblical. We meditate by thinking about God’s word and applying it to our lives. By pondering on the Word of God, we allow the Holy Spirit to make what we have read or heard come alive in our hearts.

  1. We must speak the Word of God. In addition to meditation, the Word of God must be the words of our mouth. That means what we say must line up with the Word of God. The things we say in conversation must be acceptable in the light of the scriptures. The things we say in prayer must also line up with the teachings of the Word of God. What we say when our faith is tried or when we go through difficulties must all be aligned to our understanding of God and what He has promised to do for His children.
  2. The Lord our Strength and Redeemer. The Psalm ends by saying that what we think about and what we say must all be based on the fact that the Lord is our strength and redeemer. He is our strength when we are engaged in battle. He is our redeemer when we are in trouble. The Lord is able to lift us out of the miry clay and set our feet on solid Rock. These attributes of God should be what we meditate on and talk about.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you are my strength and my redeemer. Help me to meditate on your Word and speak your Word daily. In Jesus ’name, Amen.
