The event, organised with support from the European Union, was aimed at preventing violence and radicalisation amongst the youth of the area before, during, and after this year’s general election.

It was also aimed at ensuring that the youth understood the negative consequences of joining violent extremist groups and appreciated the legal framework that barred the activities of violent extremist and terrorist groups in the country.

Participants were drawn from various youth groups in the area including the Gonjaland Youth Association, opinion leaders, community members, and some security agencies.

Presentations focused on peaceful coexistence and inter-faith tolerance, triggers, and effects of violent extremism.

Miss Martha Bagbin, North East Gonja District Director of NCCE, speaking during the event at Wulanyili in the district in the Savannah region, emphasised the role of community stakeholders in ensuring peace in the area.

She spoke about the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, especially on social media platforms, and advised all people to always verify information before sharing and to be cautious of divisive narratives that could fuel extremism.

Miss Bagbin touched on the alarming rate of drug abuse amongst the youth, which could influence violent extremism, and advised them to equip themselves with skills for a better future.

Inspector Haruna Mohammed, Kpalbe Police Station Officer, said the duty of the Police was to protect lives and property and appealed for community collaboration in Police operations.

He spoke on the Radicalisation of the Youth, Triggers, and effects of Violent Extremism, what to do during Attacks, Possible signs of Radicalisation, the Need for Peaceful Coexistence and National Cohesion amongst Community members.

He advised the youth not to shield suspected criminals and suspicious characters, emphasising the need for information from community members for quick response.

Mr Zakaria Mumuni, Secretary, Gonjaland Youth Association, North East Gonja District, encouraged the youth to prioritise peace and development rather than conflict.

He advised them to be mindful of their public statements, which could trigger conflict.
