The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has advised football club owners to put a business mentality behind the industry to make it more lucrative and profitable.
According to him, football is now business and if you are not a business-minded person, you cannot succeed in running a football team successfully, whether in Ghana or any part of the world.
Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, made the remarks when the management and players of Madeama Sporting Club visited his office to present the trophy they won in the just-ended Ghana Premier League to him at Sekondi in the Western region.
He said, that if one is able to manage his football team well, it will generate a lot of revenue for him and as well as create more employment for the youth.
“He continues, adding that, when you consider the exploits of the football fraternity, from Samartex to Skyy FC to Medeama SC, there is something which he has always been saying over a long period of time since he became the regional minister, that he believed the people of Western Region can turn the fortunes of the region around in their own time.”
To this end, Mr. Darko-Mensah stressed the need for football club owners to become business-minded people to survive their teams for the growth of Ghana’s economy.
“We cannot continue to rely on the past glory, we have to start our own glory in our own time.”

He added that he has always believed that the region has vibrant young men and women who are ready and prepared to make these things possible.
“In fact, this year Samartex qualified from the First Division League to the Premier League. A week before Medeama’s last match; Moses Armah Parker and George Mireku-Duker, MP for Tarkwa, when we met at Tarkwa, I told the team that, I will be in Sekondi waiting to receive the trophy, so they should go and win the league.”
And now, if they have brought the trophy, it is not only the management and team members who are happy, but as a regional minister, I am also happy, that during my time the trophy was brought back to the region after 47 years.
So, thank you, Medeama, that after 47 years of trophy thirst, you have been able to quench our thirst and brought back the joy and happiness to our faces.
He pledged to support the team with GHC 47,000 for the CAF Champions League competition preparation.
“In fact, Western region, everybody is aware that when it comes to natural resources of this country, it is here. So, if Medeama can win this cup for us, it has clearly gone to demonstrate that the best is in the West.”
He challenged the team to win the 2023/2024 Premier League title to consolidate their championship.
He, therefore, promised that the Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) will continue to support management and the team, the people of the Western region will also continue to support the team to grow from strength to strength and glory to glory.
This, according to him, will make the region become the best place throughout the country and the world at large.
