Excellencies,

I have observed how you have started switching gears on your campaign even though you have not indicated that you have formally launched your respective campaigns in the “grand style” typical of our politics. We hope that when your parties’ manifesto are presented, all that you have been trumpeting on your various rounds courting support, will find space in the manifesto, black and white. We wouldn’t countenance a situation where candidates make promises outside their manifestoes, and when they win elections and the electorate demand the fulfillment of those promises, they are told that that was not part of the manisfesto. We as Ghanaians also deserve honest leaders “some”. “No ho asɛm ara nyen!

From scrutiny to siege: An open letter to the Vice-President

But as our conversations about the critical decision of choosing running mates for the upcoming 2024 elections continue, I would like to direct your attention to the constitutional responsibilities outlined in Article 60 (1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

Article 60 (1) clearly states that there shall be a Vice-President of Ghana who shall perform functions as may be assigned to him by this Constitution or by the President. This provision underscores the dynamic and functional role that the Vice-President is expected to play in our governance structure.

In considering potential candidates for the role of Vice-President, it is essential to bear in mind that this individual is not a mere placeholder or a spare tire, to use a colloquial expression. The Vice-President is an integral part of the executive branch, entrusted with specific functions and responsibilities that contribute to the effective functioning of our government.

As you deliberate on your choices, it is crucial to prioritize candidates who embody the qualities of a functional and proactive leader. The Vice-President should be someone capable of assuming substantive roles, contributing meaningfully to policy formulation, and actively engaging in initiatives that advance the well-being of our nation.

Here are some points to consider:

  1. Seek individuals who have demonstrated proactive leadership in their previous roles, showcasing an ability to take initiative and drive positive change.
  2.  Consider candidates with a deep understanding of policy issues and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the development and implementation of sound policies for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.
  3. The Vice-President plays a crucial role in collaborating with the President and other government officials. Therefore, and I say again, THEREFORE, look for candidates with strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  4.  Identify individuals whose track records reflect a genuine commitment to the development and progress of Ghana, aligning with the aspirations of our nation.

(I wish I had red pen to underline the very important characteristics, as we used to do in our note books during our JSS days.)

Dear Sirs, your-who-will-become-our Vice-President should not be seen as a passive figure but as an active and engaged leader contributing significantly to the national agenda. By selecting a functional Vice-President, you are not only strengthening your leadership team but also reinforcing the foundation for a more prosperous and progressive Ghana.

Aloo?
