I AM WHO I AM
Scripture Reading: Exodus 3
And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14
God’s self-revelation to Moses was not related to other things like sun, moon, rivers, or other activities like farming or love. He was not the sun god, moon god or god of fire. He showed Himself to Moses as one who did not depend on another to be who He is. The Lord is not God because of what He does; He is God because of who He is.
Moses immediately understood that the God he was dealing with was far superior to all the gods of Egypt put together. He is all that! There is nothing before Him, after Him or beside Him. That is the God we worship. And more than that, He is our Father and He lives in us.
I AM WHO I AM means He is:
• The self-existing One. The Lord has always been and always will be. He is the uncreated One who Created all things. He is Life and He gives life to all.
• The self-sustaining One. He does not need anything to make Him who He is. God does not require the worship of humans to make Him feel good about Himself. He doesn’t require our obedience for Him to be God. He has no need that cannot be met by Himself.
• The self-expressing One. He does all things by His own counsel. He thinks what He wants to think and says what He wants to say. He chooses the moments to do what He pleases to do.
He is the ever-present One who always was, always is, and always will be, the faithful and dependable God who calls Himself “I AM.” Centuries later, Jesus would take the name “I AM” and complete it: “I am the bread of life”, “I am the light of the world”, “I am the true vine”, and so on.
Today, we know the Lord as the ‘I AM’ who is All-Sufficient. He completes us. There is nothing we need that is outside of Him. Our God reigns supreme.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I bow before you and worship your Holy Name. You are who You are. The same yesterday, today and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
