In his first comprehensive interview since securing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) nomination, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia outlined his vision for Ghana’s future, emphasizing a commitment to education, economic vibrancy, and societal fairness.
Speaking with Steve Mallory, the editor of Africawatch, in Accra, Bawumia shared his ambitious plans should he succeed in the upcoming December presidential elections.
Drawing on his experience as Vice President under President Nana Akufo-Addo, Bawumia praised the current administration’s achievements but was quick to highlight his unique leadership style and objectives.
“We have been together for a long time, but we are different personalities,” he remarked, distancing himself from being seen merely as a continuation of the current government.
Bawumia, who has earned the moniker “driver’s mate” during his tenure as Vice President, expressed his readiness to take the wheel, “I am now ready to be the main driver,” he declared, signalling his readiness to lead.
Central to Bawumia’s campaign is the utilization of digital technology to transform Ghana. He believes that technology can be a cornerstone for solving persistent challenges in governance and economic development. His vision includes creating a future where Ghanaian youth have access to quality education, and where the economy is not just thriving but inclusive.
“I believe that I have the vision, the honesty, the integrity, the competence, the drive, the work ethic, the compassion, and the innovative ideas to lead and serve Ghana as the president,” Bawumia stated confidently and made a passionate appeal to voters, asking for a chance to implement his vision as the nation’s leader.
