Member of Parliament for Fomena, Hon. Andrew Amoako Asiamah has stated his decision to pitch camp with his mother party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the next Parliament.

According to him, the misunderstanding he had with the governing party during the Parliamentary primaries have been left behind.

He stated that his constituents including the chiefs and queenmothers have advised him to forget the past and stay with the NPP family despite what happened.

During an interview in Parliament on Wednesday 16th December 2020, Hon. Andrew Asiamah assured that he holds no grudges against anybody and will sit with the majority in the next Parliament.

The Fomena MP broke away from the NPP after he lost the party’s Parliamentary primary and went on to contest the Parliamentary election as an independent candidate and won.

The party declared him ‘persona non grata’ after he filed his nomination to contest the Fomena seat as an independent candidate.

His decision led to the petitioning of the Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye by the NPP, who rusticated him from the House for breaching provisions of the ruling party’s constitution.

Hon. Andrew Asiamah denied giving conditions in order to sit with the majority and indicated that he would not make any demand from the party.

He said, “If something like that was done to me and I was not happy why should I decide to do the same to the party. I have not done that.”

“What I am looking for is to make sure whatever the party does is open and transparent for everybody to see that this is the way we are going. That is what I am looking for so I am not going to make any specific demands.”

The NPP, he said, has not formally apologised to him but indicated there have been lot of communication.

He explained that just after the elections he switched off his phones due to security reasons and rebuffed claims he refused to take the calls of the NPP Parliamentary candidate and the party’s constituency executives.

“I understand the President tried to reach out to me personally but like I said, immediately after the elections my phones were off. But he did that through some people who reached out to me,” he said.

Mr. Andrew Asiamah expressed displeasure at the decision of the Speaker to kick him out after he filed to contest the Fomena seat as an independent candidate.

According to him, the decision was unfair but stressed he would take it in its stride because that is part of life in politics.

He indicated that any offer the NPP would make to him is not important because he will abide by the principles he has observed throughout his life.

He stressed that the national interest is foremost in the sense that the nation has to be governed and he is not looking for divisions.
