Mr Afenyo-Markin, who is the Majority Leader in Parliament, polled 39,512 votes out of the 59,623 votes and Dr James Kofi Annan obtaining 19,383 votes while Ms Louisa Buabeng Independent had 81 votes.

In the presidential bid, former President, Mr John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic (NDC) secured 25,127 out of 58,275 votes, while Dr Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) recorded 32,200 votes with 1,348 votes rejected.

Mr Afenyo-Markin, after being declared winner, by Mr Rafai Sabtiwu, the Effutu Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission, gave thanks to the Almighty God for how far he had brought him and expressed appreciation to the constituency executives and all who supported him.

He stated that the people of Effutu were increasingly supportive and had confidence in his leadership because of the various projects to improve their lives.

He promised to work harder to meet the aspirations of the entire citizenry.

Mr Afenyo Markin asked his opponents to unite and work with him.

Dr James Kofi Annan, Effutu NDC  PC, on the other hand, expressed concern about some malpractices in the exercise that needed to be investigated to ensure that the anomalies were corrected in future.

He further expressed concern about the continuous intimidation and harassment of members of the party in the constituency.

Mr Annan thanked God for being with him in all his endeavours and commended the teeming members and supporters of the party for their continuous commitment and dedication to the party.

He urged them not to engage in any act that could disturb the peace in Effutu.
