The General Transport, Petroleum, Chemical, and Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress says the interdiction of two of its members by the board of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is merely a display of power.

The two, who are also executives of the union, were suspended for purportedly releasing confidential information on the contentious agreement between TOR and Torentco.

The workers had previously registered their opposition to the deal and are also demanding the dissolution of the TOR board.

The chairman of the union, Bernard Owusu, said they are unperturbed by the interdictions.

“This is the first time we are hearing about directives not to speak to the media in the history of TOR, and so this is just a sheer display of power by the board of directors to show that they are in charge and untouchable. I want the whole world to know that these are innocent workers, and the board just wants to show power.”

Mr. Owusu added that the union will write to the board to demand the reinstatement of the two interdicted executives.

“The mother union will write to management to reverse the decision unconditionally, and we are consulting our structures. We are having a management committee meeting, and from there, we will come out and let the world know what we want to do.”
