Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan Constituency, Hon. Joe Ghartey, has expressed shock at claims in the 2022 Budget that the Essipong Stadium in the Western Region is under rehabilitation and 90% complete.

He has, therefore, demanded to be furnished with the update of the said project, which is located in his constituency.

A letter addressed by Mr. Ghartey to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Yussif said his personal checks indicate no rehabilitation work is going on at Essipong.

He wrote, “The Finance Minister in the Budget Statement delivered on Wednesday, 17th November, 2021 stated that the rehabilitation works on the Essipon stadium is 90% completed.”

“My checks reveal otherwise. As Member of Parliament for the area. I would be grateful if you could furnish me with the update of the said project, which is located in my constituency.”

“Furthermore, if the information given is inaccurate, please furnish the Finance Minister with the accurate information to enable him advise himself accordingly.”

“The project is of great interest to me and my constituents,” he added.

Finance Ken Ofori-Atta while presenting the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government on Wednesday disclosed that some stadia across the country were renovated in 2021 and are at various stages.

According to him, the beneficiary stadia include the Accra Sports Stadium, 98% complete; Phase I of Baba Yara Stadium, 98% complete; Essipong Stadium, 90% complete; and the Cape Coast Stadium, 60% complete.

The Government, he said, will in 2022 continue with the construction of the Abiriw and the New Edubiase sports stadia as well as commence the rehabilitation of the Sunyani Coronation Park.

Hon. Joe Ghartey, who is aspiring for the presidential slot of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2024 elections, however contends claims on the Essipong Stadium is not true and is demanding justification for the pronouncement.
