Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has stepped forward as a surety for Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi in the ongoing Sky Train trial involving a $2 million financial loss to the state.

Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi, a former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF), was granted GHC10 million bail with two sureties to be justified after pleading not guilty to four charges, including wilfully causing financial loss to the state and the intentional dissipation of public funds.

Mr. Agyapong, a prominent businessman and political figure, fulfilled part of the court’s bail requirements by vouching for the 80-year-old academic and statesman, whose health and advanced age have been highlighted throughout the early stages of the trial.

The charges stem from the disbursement of $2 million for the Accra Sky Train project, which was never realized.

As part of his bail conditions, Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi has been ordered to surrender his travel documents and report weekly to the police.

The case, which is being heard at the High Court in Accra and presided over by Justice Comfort Tasiame, has been adjourned to June 10, 2025, for a case management conference.

The hearing will set timelines for pre-trial processes and determine how the trial will proceed.

Agyapong’s involvement as surety adds a political dimension to the high-profile trial, which continues to draw public interest and scrutiny over accountability.
