Former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has successfully undergone a major surgical procedure to treat prostate cancer at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.

The operation—a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy—was performed on Friday, June 13, 2025, and lasted over four hours. According to his wife, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, the surgeons are pleased with the outcome of the procedure and have now placed the former minister on a postoperative care regime to support his recovery.

In a heartfelt statement issued, Prof. Ofori-Atta disclosed that the procedure was carefully scheduled following a prostate cancer diagnosis.

She expressed relief that the surgery went well and that her husband is responding positively.

“Kenneth has always been resilient. But this has been very difficult; with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him,” Prof. Ofori-Atta stated, referring to recent developments involving the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

The red alert, issued shortly before Mr. Ofori-Atta’s scheduled surgery, sparked controversy and concern among his supporters, who argue that the timing showed a lack of sensitivity to his health condition.

Despite the backdrop of legal pressure, Prof. Ofori-Atta said her husband remains focused on recovery.

“Kenneth is bearing up well and focused on doing whatever he can to be restored to good health,” she added.

The family expressed profound gratitude to Ghanaians and the international community for their support, prayers, and messages of encouragement during this difficult time.

Mr. Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2023, has had a polarising public life.

He was instrumental in leading Ghana’s economic programmes under the Akufo-Addo administration.
