The Kumasi bloc in Parliament has condemned the chaos that marred the Ashanti Regional Council of State representative election on Tuesday, February 11 2025.
The election descended into chaos when unidentified individuals stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) and forcibly snatched a ballot box during the vote-counting process.
According to reports, one contestant had secured 49 out of 84 votes before the disruption occurred.
Witnesses claimed that upon realizing the likely winner, the assailants seized the ballot box, halting the process abruptly.
The Kumasi Bloc of Parliament condemned the incident, describing it as a ‘disgraceful and undemocratic act.’
In a statement signed by Francis Asenso-Boakye, Chairman of the caucus, the group called for immediate action to ensure justice.
He outlined three key demands: The swift arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved; the immediate resumption and completion of the electoral process and a firm commitment from the government and authorities to prevent future disruptions.
“This brazen attack on our democratic process is not just an assault on the integrity of the elections but a direct challenge to the peace and stability of our region. Such lawless behaviour has no place in our democracy and must be met with the full force of the law,” the statement said.
The disruption has triggered widespread condemnation from civil society organizations and political groups. Many have called for increased security at future electoral events to prevent similar occurrences.
With the fate of the election now uncertain, residents of the Ashanti Region await the next steps from law enforcement and the Electoral Commission. The Kumasi Bloc insists that democracy must prevail.
The MPs demanded a free, fair and peaceful electoral process and warned they will not tolerate any efforts to undermine the rule of law.
