The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park says it is installing new irrigation systems to augment water flow to enhance the functioning of the fountains and irrigate the lawns to beautify the park.
News in circulation a week ago indicated that the lawns had dried up, washrooms were unkept and the beautiful fountains were bereft of water.
Mr Edward Quao, the Acting Director of the Park, said water flow from the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to the Park was a challenge, hence the need to install a new irrigation system to augment the flow.
The irrigation system operated with the aid of boreholes and two wells dug using the reverse osmosis system to treat the water and reduce its salinity before distribution within the park, he said.
Mr Quao told the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Friday that though there was not enough water for the fountains to function and the lawns irrigated due to challenges from the GWL, the facility was working around the clock to ensure its proper operations.
“We are trying a new irrigation system and doing the final plumbing works. We have boreholes and two wells with osmosis systems installed. The osmosis system was installed late December, and this will help us to get our own treated water for use,” he said.
“Our challenge is that we get water supply to the Park at least twice a week from Ghana Water Limited and at the time of the publication there was no water. I personally would make sure there’s water flowing to the washroom,” he said.
He said the washrooms were managed and kept clean with the little water available.
The GNA visited the Park and can confirm that the fountains were working, and the washrooms were clean with water flowing.
Mr Quao said actions were being expedited to ensure the lawns came into full shape and looked green, adding that the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park was ready to give visitors and tourists an unforgettable memory.
Mr Daniel Normann, a Dutch and an insurance agent, who visited the Park, said: “The experience is great, I’m delighted to learn a lot of history of late President Nkrumah. The place is a nice sanctuary. It is laudable to honour the work he has done.”
He said Dr Nkrumah’s memories must guide Ghanaians and Africans to the path of commitment and development as he led the liberation struggle, got it for Ghana and helped other countries on the continent to attain same status.
