Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has stated the Ghana Mining Expo, which is in its fourth year, is fast establishing itself as one of the most important mining conferences in the West African Region.

He emphasized that the chosen theme for this year’s edition, “Sustainable Mineral Resources Development and Well-Being of Mining Communities,” reflects the critical issues of responsible mining, value addition, environmental considerations, and inclusive development.

The Ghana Mining Expo is a significant event showcasing the country’s mineral resource potential.

Abu Jinapor was addressing attendees of the expo last Friday in the port city of Takoradi.

Ghana, known for its substantial mineral resources, including gold, bauxite, manganese, and diamonds, aims to leverage these resources to drive industrialization and economic growth.

The Minister shared Ghana’s position as the leading gold producer on the continent, with over 3.74 million ounces produced in 2022.

He expressed confidence in maintaining this position through investments in existing mines and the development of new ones.

Mr. Jinapor admitted Ghana has not fully benefited from its mineral resources, mainly due to over-reliance on raw material exports and inadequate linkages with other sectors of the economy.

The government, he said, has therefore implemented a three-pillar strategy to address this, focusing on diversification of mineral resources, value addition through beneficiation, and local content and participation.

These efforts aim to attract investments, develop industries along the value chain, and ensure that Ghanaians benefit from mining activities.

He highlighted various initiatives, such as establishing a gold refinery through a public-private partnership, working towards London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) certification, and developing integrated aluminium and iron and steel industries.

He indicated the government also prioritizes green minerals like lithium, seeking to retain a significant portion of their value chain within the country.

Regarding the well-being of mining communities, the MInister stressed the importance of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) and policies like the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP) and Community Mining Schemes.

These initiatives aim to directly benefit mining communities and provide alternative opportunities for livelihood.

Mr. Jinapor stressed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in achieving sustainable mineral resource development.

He called for cooperation, expertise, innovation, and partnerships to drive growth and transformation in the sector.

He pledged the government’s commitment to fulfilling its duty and working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the responsible utilization of mineral resources for the nation’s benefit.
