I write to you, in remembrance of my senior brother and friend, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, Esq. of blessed memory. It was he who once said, “Fear delegates!”. Since then, you have been venerated and feared. In fact, your veneration has soared to a height where it has been the desire of many to attain the level you have reached.
27th January, 2024 marks “your day”, and all eyes will be on. You are, no doubt the envy of many. Moments before, you may undergo the ritual of being camped at unknown locations, to forestall needless infiltrations into your camps, as well as undesirable influences, and possibly, pledge the head of your first-born kids, should you, after receiving your just recompense even prior to discharging your solemn obligations, fail, neglect or omit to honour your pledge.
As I reflect on your upcoming exercise, some thoughts have been flashing my mind, causing me to poke my ugly nose into your affairs. May I be forgiven if in so doing, I touch on your raw nerves.
Let me cut the chase, and remind you, that it is crucial that you vote not based on, the notorious and widely perceived belief of monetary considerations, but rather on the suitability of a candidate for the high office of Parliamentary candidate.
Voting solely for financial gains can have detrimental effects on your constituency, the nation, and even yourselves. It is essential to consider the long-term impact of your decision and choose a candidate who possesses the qualities necessary to serve effectively.
As you prepare to vote, remember to vote candidates who have a proven track record of honesty and ethical behavior. Look for candidates who have demonstrated strong leadership abilities and the capacity to inspire and unite others.
Vote for Candidates who genuinely care about the welfare of their constituents, those who genuinely seek what they can do for their constituents, and not what they stand to gain by being a member of parliament only.
Choose candidates who have a clear vision for the future and are willing to think outside the box to find innovative solutions to the challenges facing your constituency. Remember the words of Albert Einstein, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world.”
Look for candidates who possess excellent communication skills and can effectively articulate their ideas and concerns to both the constituents and fellow lawmakers. Remember in particular that parliament is a forum for deliberations, and your MP should be a person who can make an impact, not a pew warmer, or “yeah yeah” person.
Your MP should be a person of knowledge, and open to learning. Parliamentary work requires persons who are able to read chunks of material and comprehend them, so they can make an impact.
Remember, your vote has the power to shape the future of your constituency and the nation as a whole. By voting based on conscience and the suitability of the candidate, you can contribute to the progress and development of your community.
