Minister for Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development, Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, has emphasized the importance of quality construction, urging District Assemblies to strengthen supervision and ensure that ongoing infrastructure projects meet the highest standards of durability and functionality.

“The quality of these projects will determine their longevity and their value to our communities. We cannot compromise on this.”

“Poor workmanship will not be tolerated, and we expect these projects to stand the test of time, serving their communities for years to come,” the Minister declared.

The Minister’s comments came during an intensive two-day inspection tour of several project sites across the Western and Central Regions.

The tour focused on the timely completion of key infrastructure projects under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP), a central pillar of the government’s strategy to strengthen secondary cities as drivers of socio-economic growth.

During his visit to Municipal and District Assemblies in Ahanta West, Effia Kwesimintsim, Mfantseman, Assin Fosu, Agona West, and Awutu Senya East, Hon. Adjei-Mensah Korsah reviewed the progress of various projects, including roads, drains, markets, lorry parks, and terminals, all at different stages of development.

He praised the Assemblies where projects were progressing on schedule, commending them for their dedication.

“I’m pleased to see progress where projects are on track. These projects are vital to the communities they serve and to Ghana’s broader development goals,” he said.

However, the Minister issued a firm warning to contractors and Assemblies that were behind schedule.

“We will not entertain any requests for extension in contract duration. These projects are essential to our nation’s development, and any delays undermine our goals for economic growth and community wellbeing.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering projects within stipulated timelines, warning that delays could lead to contractual breaches and potential cancellations.

“The successful and timely completion of these projects is non-negotiable,” he stressed.

The GSCSP initiative aims to build resilient and self-sustaining secondary cities, fostering local economic growth and enhancing service delivery.

By providing funding and capacity-building resources to District Assemblies, the program seeks to ensure the development of robust infrastructure to improve the quality of life in these areas.

As he concluded his tour, Adjei-Mensah Korsah reiterated the government’s determination to meet deadlines while delivering high-quality infrastructure.

The urgency and quality of the work being done, he said, will define the future of Ghana’s secondary cities and warned that the stakes are too high, and the timeline too critical for anything less than excellence.
