Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, a political science lecturer and analyst, has slammed President Nana Akufo-Addo for his recent comments regarding his successor.

Speaking on 3FM’s Hot Edition, Dr. Otchere underscored what he described as “inherent illogicality” in the President’s statement that he does not want to be succeeded by John Dramani Mahama, his previous electoral opponent.

President Akufo-Addo, during a mini-rally in Doboro after visiting Blue Skies Limited, expressed his lack of confidence in Mahama’s ability to develop the country, citing his two electoral victories over Mahama as a basis.

“I can’t hand over to someone I defeated twice and who is not happy with everything I do; he will destroy the work that I have done,” said Akufo-Addo, endorsing Dr. Bamwua, whom he trusts to continue his administration’s work.

Dr. Otchere argued that President Akufo-Addo’s stance was particularly problematic considering that Mahama, who defeated Akufo-Addo in the 2012 elections, did not make similar comments during his 2016 campaign.

He stressed the importance of a peaceful and dignified transfer of power, regardless of the election outcome.

“It is very important. So it doesn’t matter who wins but the point is that although your favourite son is equally contesting if you have nothing to hide, I think you shouldn’t be worried about who wins the elections,” Dr. Otchere stated.

Dr. Otchere suggested that such comments could pose significant challenges for Dr. Bamwua’s campaign, potentially impacting his ability to establish his own political identity.

“I think that the President is a major problem for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign but as of now, they wouldn’t know until they have lost the elections,” he added, noting that the President’s remarks might distract from Bawumia’s merits.
