Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has taken a jab at his main rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following an awkward moment during the commissioning of the e-border system at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Mahama described the incident as a reflection of the government’s digital shortcomings.
Addressing supporters in the Manso Nkwanta constituency as part of his campaign tour in the Ashanti Region he said, “Yesterday, something amusing happened. There’s a machine at the airport that scans your passport for entry when you arrive. It’s a standard technology at airports worldwide. I’ve never heard of a president or vice president commissioning such a system because it’s routine.”
Mocking the event, the NDC leader added, “But because Mr. Digital wanted everyone to know he is Mr. Digital, he cleared his schedule to launch the electronic gates. When he placed his Ghana Card for screening, the gate wouldn’t open. He tried repeatedly, but the digital gate didn’t open for the digital man.”
The incident, which occurred during the commissioning of the airport’s electronic gates, saw Vice-President Bawumia experience a delay during the Ghana Card verification process, leading to an awkward pause.
Mr. Mahama criticized Dr. Bawumia for what he termed “overpromising and underdelivering” on his digital transformation agenda. He argued that the mishap symbolized the administration’s failure to meet its lofty promises.
Referencing Dr. Bawumia’s own past remarks about economic fundamentals, Mr. Mahama quipped, “They can try all they want, but if the fundamentals are weak, the digital gate will expose you.”
