Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has mocked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim of embarking on a “rescue mission” for Ghana in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Dr. Bawumia, who was elected as the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), dismissed the notion of a rescue need, asserting that the NPP had already rescued the country from Mahama’s economic mismanagement.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase Radio on Sunday night, the Vice President claimed God rescued Ghana from the NDC government because of the nature of the mismanagement that was taking place.

He said, “By 2024 they needed to go out for this economy to be rescued.”

He pointed out that the NDC government had to seek a rescue mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) due to economic mismanagement.

“This [Ghana] economy had to be rescued by the IMF, they [NDC] had to go for a rescue, that was the real rescue mission, as a price of mismanagement of this economy,” Dr. Bawumia stated, emphasizing that the IMF rescue mission didn’t quite work because the NDC government deviated from the terms of the agreement.

Contrary to the NDC’s claim of a rescue mission, the NPP flagbearer touted the accomplishments of the NPP government, stating, “The real rescue happened when by the grace of God with the election of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and with that election, we came into office and again, all the things that were going wrong, we have tried to right them, we have very much put everything back on course.”

He outlined the achievements of the NPP government, including bringing macroeconomic stability, restoring teacher training and nursing training allowances, and implementing initiatives such as “planting for food and jobs” and the “one district one factory” transformation.

“Now you don’t understand what they mean by coming to rescue; we have rescued the country already, and we are now building upon that unless maybe they are not informed,” Dr. Bawumia stated and challenged the NDC’s narrative of a need for rescue in the upcoming elections.
