The third cohort of the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP) was officially inaugurated on Tuesday at the University of Media Arts and Communication (UniMAC) in North Dzorwulu.
The MCEP, designed to equip media professionals with advanced skills, plays a pivotal role in strengthening the media’s contribution to Ghana’s democratic governance.
In her opening address the Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar stressed the essential role a well-trained and informed media plays in nation-building.
“I am thrilled by the commitment and enthusiasm shown by participants here and those joining online,” she remarked. “This programme is not just another event; it’s a critical step towards enhancing both our democracy and our media environment.”
Hon. Abubakar also praised her predecessor, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, for laying the groundwork for the programme, which has since become a cornerstone of media training in Ghana.
First launched in January 2022, the MCEP focuses on advancing media professionals’ skills to support the nation’s development.
Participants, ranging from reporters and producers to social media executives and media critics, were carefully selected by an independent working committee.
To date, over 100 journalists have benefitted from the programme’s prior cohorts.
Reflecting on its broader impact, the Minister noted, “The MCEP has gained recognition as a powerful tool for improving the work of practicing journalists. It has also inspired similar initiatives by the UNDP and the British High Commission.”
Participants are set to engage in interactive discussions and benefit from the insights of experienced facilitators.
The Minister encouraged them to fully utilize the opportunity, stressing the importance of professionalism and integrity.
“The media is a powerful instrument that comes with great responsibility. You have a duty to inform and educate the public truthfully and with dedication to facts,” she said.
The opening ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor of UniMAC, the Chairperson of the National Media Commission, media association representatives, and various partners.
Supported by the Volta River Authority and MTN, the four-day programme is expected to significantly contribute to participants’ career growth and the evolution of Ghana’s media landscape.
The MCEP is scheduled to conclude on Friday, September 13, 2024.
