The Minority in Parliament is sounding the alarm over what it describes as a fast-deteriorating security situation in Bawku, calling on the government to take immediate, decisive action to prevent further loss of life and humanitarian suffering.
Addressing the media on Friday, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Interior and Defence Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, expressed grave concern over the unrelenting wave of violence in Bawku.
He cited recurring incidents of “sporadic shootings, arson, and home invasions” that have left numerous residents dead or missing.
“Over the past few months, the intensity and frequency of attacks have escalated. The growing sophistication of weaponry used is particularly alarming,” Rev. Ntim Fordjour lamented.
Rrecent events, he said, including targeted bus attacks and the burning of the residence of Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, underscore the worsening volatility of the region.
Describing Bawku as a “strategic border town,” Rev. Fordjour warned that the instability has implications beyond the immediate area.
According to him, the spread of violence to other regions such as the North East and Ahafo is a clear sign that the situation requires a more coordinated and robust national response.
“This is no longer a localized conflict. The ripple effects are being felt across regions, posing a national and regional security risk,” he noted.
The Ranking Member also highlighted the severe impact of the conflict on basic services in the area. Schools remain closed, healthcare facilities are under strain, and professionals—including teachers and nurses—are avoiding postings to the town due to safety fears.
“The continued insecurity is gradually crippling essential services, worsening the plight of residents, and deepening the humanitarian crisis,” he said.
Rev. Fordjour criticized the government’s current strategy as insufficient, urging a shift toward a more proactive and comprehensive resolution framework.
“The government must demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness. The people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security. We urge the government to prioritize a sustainable resolution to this crisis before it spirals further out of control,” he added.
With tensions still simmering and reprisals continuing, the Minority insists the time for action is now.
