Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem recorded its highest monthly value yet, with total transactions reaching GH¢365.0 billion in April 2025.

This milestone, reported in the latest economic and financial data from the Bank of Ghana, reflects a 3.8% increase from GH¢351.7 billion in March and underscores the transformative impact of recent policy changes.

A key driver behind this surge is the Mahama administration’s decision to abolish the electronic transfer levy (e-levy), a move that has significantly reduced transaction costs and revived consumer confidence in mobile financial services.

The policy shift appears to have removed a major barrier to usage, resulting in a notable increase in both the value and volume of mobile money transactions.

In April, the number of mobile money transactions climbed to 778 million, up from 764 million in March.

This steady growth reinforces mobile money’s expanding role in enabling financial inclusion and streamlining payments across sectors.

The upward trend is further supported by increased mobile phone penetration, an ever-growing agent network, and the convenience offered by mobile-based platforms.

Analysts suggest the momentum is likely to continue, given the supportive regulatory environment and Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation.
