Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has underscored the essential role of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, one of the five pillars of Islam, in fostering spiritual growth, discipline, and moral values among Muslims and its positive ripple effects on the Ghanaian society at large.
He extolled the holistic nature of Ramadan, which he stressed goes beyond the physical act of fasting from dawn until sunset.
“Ramadan is not merely about abstaining from food and drink; it’s a period devoted to personal improvement, spiritual reflection, and the cultivation of virtues such as gratitude, discipline, and a commitment to moral values, echoing the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH),” he stated.
The Tamale Central MP made the call in a statement on the floor of Parliament on Monday to welcome the fasting month, which started on Monday.
He outlined the three distinct phases of Ramadan—each serving a unique purpose in the spiritual journey of a Muslim.
The first ten days are focused on mercy, followed by a period of seeking forgiveness, and finally, the last days aim at liberation from sin.
“The overarching goal is to emerge as individuals who are not only spiritually elevated but also agents of positive change, contributing to a just, corruption-free, and harmonious society,” Hon. Murtala explained.
He emphasized the societal benefits of Ramadan, including its psychological and health advantages, such as fostering a sense of community through charity (zakat) and detoxifying the body.
Mr. Murtala also stressed the importance of religious tolerance and the inclusive environment Ghana has nurtured, urging educational institutions to accommodate Muslim students during Ramadan.
With the 2024 General Elections on the horizon, Hon. Murtala Muhammed cautioned against the politicization of religion, stating, “We must refrain from exploiting religious beliefs for parochial gains. We should focus on maintaining the religious harmony that defines us as a nation.”
The MP also addressed the national debate surrounding LGBTQ+ activities and the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Value Bill, 2024.
He expressed the collective apprehension of Ghanaians and appealed to the President for the prompt enactment of the bill, which aligns with the country’s cultural and societal norms.
He reiterated that the lessons of Ramadan should continue to inspire throughout the year, advocating for forgiveness, self-improvement, and the betterment of society.
“Let us carry the principles of Ramadan forward, fostering a world that is more compassionate, understanding, and harmonious,” he stated.
Chairman of the Muslim Caucus and Member of Parliament for Yendi, Farouk Aliu Mahama, contributing to the statement underscored the critical importance of Ramadan, emphasizing its role in fostering unity, forgiveness, and charity among Muslims and the wider Ghanaian community, especially in the context of the upcoming election year.
Ramadan, he said, is a time for Muslims to enhance their character, spiritual well-being, and societal contributions.
Farouk Mahama called on the Muslim community to use the period as a guide for their conduct, promoting peace and unity as the election approaches.
He appealed for political tolerance and religious solidarity, stating, “I believe we will all adhere to this image and promote the religious awareness in this country.
