Mr Gabriel Yekye, a-57-year-old farmer at Amanfoso, near Nsoatre has been adjudged the 2024 Sunyani Municipal Best farmer.
For his prize he received a motor-king machine, knapsack sprayer, pairs of Wellington boots, cutlasses, key soap, bags of fertilizer and quantities of weedicides.
Mr John Owusu, 35 years and a farmer at Timber Nkwanta, a community in the Municipality, the first runner-up, received a deep freezer, knapsack sprayer, pairs of Wellington boots, cutlasses, and key bar soap, wax print, fertilizers, and weedicides for his prize.
The second runner-up went to Madam Mariama Abubakar, 52 years, and a farmer at Fiapre who took home a 42 inches coloured television set, knapsack sprayer, pair of Wellington boots, cutlasses, wax print, fertilizers, and weedicides.
Other deserving farmers were also awarded and presented with similar prizes.
Speaking at the Municipal celebration of the 40th National Farmers Day, held at Fiapre, Mr Kusi Buadum, the Sunyani West Municipal Chief Executive commended the farmers for the hard work and stressed the government’s commitment to making farming attractive.
He said farming remained a lucrative enterprise and advised the unemployed youth in the area to capitalize on the government’s interventions including the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and engage in commercial farming.
Obrempong Professor Kyem Amponsah, the Chief of Fiapre commended the award winners for their hard work and expressed the hope that other farmers in the municipality would also work hard for improved food productivity.
Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sunyani West constituency donated agricultural inputs to support the celebration.
