The leadership of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has announced that some of its members are planning to form “a new MUSIGA.”
In a press release signed by Acting President of the union, Bessa Simons, the move is a ploy to cause confusion among the members.
“After the failure of their legal machinations and maneuvering, this latest attempt to break the ranks of MUSIGA is unwarranted and must be condemned by all well-meaning musicians. According to MUSIGA’ s Constitution, Article 7.4.1. Membership shall be open to; Professional musicians who are not members of any rival body of musicians,” he writes.
Bessa Simons also quotes a part of the union’s constitution (Article 7.7) which talks about Conflict of Interest.
“No member shall be permitted to hold membership in any union of musicians not affiliated with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) or in any other organization, association of musicians or collecting society that has goals or engages in a pattern of conduct undermining the legitimate interest/s of the Musicians Union of Ghana or any affiliate.”
He further cautions that any member who joins the purported New MUSIGA automatically loses their membership of the Musicians Union.
The Musicians Union of Ghana will be having its elections on August 8, 2023.
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has announced Tuesday, August 8, as the proposed date to hold the Union’s National Election Committee (NEC) national and regional elections.
This was made known in an emergency meeting by NEC to review the roadmap offered by the election committee chaired by Peter Marfo, the outgoing Eastern Regional chairman of MUSIGA.
With the new date, the voters register which opened on Monday, March 20, will end on April 3. The new directive is intended to allow members to check their status and eligibility.
Thereafter, the new voters register for the election will be compiled from April 4 to April 18. This will be followed by the exhibition of the new voter register from April 20 to April 23.
Contestants will then have the period before August 8 to run their campaigns for the elections to take place nationwide.
