The Coalition of Muslim Organisations Ghana (COMOG) has expressed its support for the government’s decision to add additional holidays for Muslims in the country.

This follows an announcement by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed, declaring Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays in Ghana. The move fulfils the President’s pledge to the Muslim community to extend the holiday period for celebrating their religious festivities.

In a statement issued on Saturday, March 22, the Minister explained that the additional holiday is in recognition of Eid-ul-Fitr, which falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025. He urged the public to observe the holidays accordingly, as declared through an Executive Instrument (E.I.).

Reacting to the announcement, COMOG spokesperson Mohammed Shaibu Shamsu told Channel One News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu that the additional holiday comes as a great relief to the Muslim community.

He noted that many Muslims had previously struggled with having only one day to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr and praised the government for addressing the concern.

“It’s very welcoming news, COMOG has waged a crusade on many issues that have some negative telling on the Muslim community in Ghana.

“If today, the issue of holidays for our Muslim community and Islam in Ghana is now two days for the Eid-ul-Fitr, it is indeed a welcoming news. Many more is expected of the government. And we want to commend the government for speedily coming out with this particular law and operationalising it and making sure that in this very year, Muslims are going to enjoy two holidays.”

The decision has been widely welcomed by the Muslim community across the country.
