President Akufo-Addo is set to address the nation tonight on measures his administration has put in place to intensify the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic to prevent further spread.

The 26th address slated for 8 pm comes at a time when the country is recording high numbers of the coronavirus disease.

The Ghana Health Service in its latest update revealed that as of July 21, the number of active cases stand at 4,094.

Twenty-six out of the active cases are said to be severe while 15 others are in critical condition. Over 400 new cases have been recorded.

Already, some schools such as Achimota School in Accra, have had students fallen prey to the new delta variant.

The country has also lost two more lives to the virus. While, the death toll stands at 821, the total case count is 101,170 with some 96,255 discharges/recoveries.

The surge in cases has been attributed to the total disregard for the Covid-19 safety protocols.

According to the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), available data suggests that the country is witnessing its third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Some members of the public have blamed the government for the surge in cases. They say leadership is not setting good examples in the fight against the pandemic as government officials have on several occasions breached the laid down directives.

Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu has since called on President Akufo-Addo to admit to the role he played in the current total disregard for the Covid-19 safety protocols and render an unqualified apology to the public.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ Newsfile on Saturday, he explained that such a gesture, coupled with an assurance that government will not repeat that error, will encourage Ghanaians, who have decided not to observe the safety protocols, to get back on board.

“At the Eid-ul-Adha celebration, the President even said it that we have let down our guard. So perhaps, he should come forward with another address to the nation and pledge that we are starting afresh and seriously. So this time, we will not let down our guard. I think that would help.

“When citizens are angry, it is good for him to directly also admit his part in all of this, because starting from Sir John’s funeral, you remember even before the funeral, the elections last year created a lot of problems. These campaigns and rallies were super spreader events, but the politicians wouldn’t have any of it.

“So he should come properly, admit his part in all of this and with that, citizens will be willing to come on board with him, so we start afresh,” he elaborated.

Meanwhile in the President’s 25th address to the nation on May 16, he stated that the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012), will remain in force, and the security agencies will not relent in their efforts to enforce it as the majority of Ghanaians have not been vaccinated.

He also informed the populace of government initiatives to procure more vaccines to attain herd immunity. He stressed the need for all safety protocols to be followed as stated.
