The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and the Volta River Authority (VRA), have taken proactive measures to enhance disaster preparedness and response mechanisms, conducting a tabletop simulation of its Flood Contingency Plan.

Mr. Seji Sadji, the Deputy Director of NADMO disclosed to the Ghana News Agency that the simulation exercise was to enhance disaster response mechanisms and emphasize the importance of coordination among stakeholders.

He noted that while significant progress had been made in providing temporary housing for flood victims, long-term recovery remained a challenge.

“Nearly 1,000 individuals still await permanent housing, despite a decrease from the initial 10,000. Ongoing construction efforts in Central Tongu, South Tongu, North Tongu, are focused on providing permanent housing for affected families,” he explained.

However, Mr. Sadji emphasized the need for continued support and effective management to ensure all affected families received adequate housing and care.

Mr. Divine Osborne Fenu, North Tongu District Chief Executive, expressed his support for the initiative, stating that the meeting was a step in the right direction to prevent future spillage disasters.

He emphasized the importance of utilizing all communication avenues to create awareness if the VRA would spill excess water from the Kpong and Akosombo dams, ensuring the safety of all communities in Tongu.

Togbe Kwasi Nego VI, Mankralo of Mepe, praised the government for its efforts, highlighting the initiative’s potential to raise awareness in the event of future flood incidents.

However, he urged the government to expedite the completion of the resettlement housing project and enhance compensation plans for flood victims.

The simulation exercise brought together the District Disaster Management Committee, comprising various stakeholders, including religious bodies and traditional authorities.

This collaboration aims to ensure effective communication and coordination during emergencies.

The exercise also demonstrated the VRA and NADMO’s proactive approach to disaster preparedness by strengthening coordination and communication.
