The National Media Commission (NMC) has welcomed the formation of the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition, an alliance dedicated to countering misinformation and disinformation ahead of the upcoming national elections.

The coalition was announced on Friday by the Media Foundation for West Africa, Dubawa, FactSpace West Africa, and other civil society organizations committed to upholding information integrity in Ghana.

The NMC praised the coalition, calling it “a crucial intervention” to protect Ghana’s information landscape in the sensitive period leading up to the elections.

According to the Commission, the spread of misinformation and malign information operations—originating both within and outside the country—pose a significant threat to Ghana’s peace, stability, and democratic consolidation.

By uniting their expertise, resources, and credibility, the coalition partners aim to strengthen Ghana’s ability to combat disinformation and Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI).

The NMC also encouraged other stakeholders dedicated to promoting peaceful elections to collaborate with the coalition to ensure a credible and transparent election process.

The Commission further announced plans to support the efforts of the Ghana Fact-Checking Coalition by providing access to its soon-to-be-launched Ghana Media Watch App, a cutting-edge technology designed to monitor and track disinformation.

The app is scheduled for release on November 14, 2024, and will bolster the coalition’s ability to detect and address harmful content in real-time.
