The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) has called for stricter security and disciplinary measures to protect students.
This follows a firearm incident at Adventist Senior High School in the Ashanti Region on April 4, 2025, where a 16-year-old male student injured a female classmate in the eye.
A statement issued by the Authority recommended closing unauthorized access points to the school, including those at Racecourse and Abrepo junctions and enhancing access control with body scans, identity checks, and visitor registration.
It also called for more trained security personnel, a reinforced code of conduct, and the removal of encroachers in coordination with local authorities.
“This unfortunate event highlights the urgent need for stricter security and discipline in schools,” the statement said, urging regular monitoring visits to ensure compliance.
NaSIA reaffirmed its commitment to student and staff safety in pre-tertiary institutions and encouraged early reporting of suspicious activities.
Investigations revealed that the firearm belonged to the student’s father and highlighted gaps in security staffing and access control.
The incident, which occurred during break time in class, was not preceded by any known conflict.
The school has since offered trauma support to students in collaboration with its guidance and counselling unit.
