Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has alleged that national security operatives, led by Richard Jakpa, stole GH₵10,000 in cash and jewelry during a raid on the residence of former Bank of Ghana Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.
The raid, conducted at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge home, reportedly failed to uncover any incriminating evidence but resulted in the disappearance of the cash and personal items belonging to the governor’s wife, including earrings and necklaces.
Speaking to the media in Parliament on Thursday, March 20, Afenyo-Markin revealed that the operatives also confiscated three official vehicles belonging to Dr. Addison. The vehicles were later found abandoned at an undisclosed location, with instructions for the governor’s drivers to retrieve them.
The Minority leader expressed concern over the operatives’ decision to dismantle the residence’s CCTV system before conducting the search, questioning the legality of their actions. “If they were acting lawfully, why dismantle the CCTV? Why take it away?” he asked.
Afenyo-Markin drew parallels to a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, warning against the abuse of power by security agencies. He accused the government of creating an environment of lawlessness and intimidation, cautioning that such actions could erode investor confidence and lead to capital flight.
“When investors see these things happening to high-ranking officials, it sends a negative signal. Even Ghanaian citizens will not feel safe,” he stated.
The Minority leader also called on President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that such incidents do not mar his legacy, describing him as a moderate and respected leader who should uphold the rule of law.
Afenyo-Markin also condemned the recent arrest of controversial broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, who was reportedly detained and released the same night.
He criticized the “Rambo-style” tactics used by state security operatives and urged for law enforcement to be carried out with a “human face.”
Afenyo-Markin expressed solidarity with Dr. Addison and his family, encouraging them to remain resilient in the face of the ordeal.
He reiterated the need for accountability and respect for the rule of law to safeguard Ghana’s democracy and stability.
