The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the assault on Akosua Otchere, a reporter from Citi FM, during the party’s Parliamentary primary aspirant vetting in the Odododiodio constituency.
In an official statement, Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the party, expressed deep regret over the incident, emphasizing that the attackers’ behavior was irresponsible and contrary to the NDC’s core values as advocates for press freedom and proponents of a positive working relationship with the media.
He extended a sincere apology to Akosua Otchere and the entire Citi FM/TV team, underscoring the party’s dedication to upholding press freedom and fostering a harmonious alliance with the media.
He stated, “The NDC is a truly democratic and peace-loving political institution that recognizes the pivotal role of the media in nation-building. We unequivocally reject any form of violence, especially attacks on journalists.”
Assuring the public of the party’s commitment to justice, Gyamfi asserted, “We are taking immediate action to identify and apprehend the assailants. Those found responsible will face disciplinary measures in accordance with the party’s rules and the laws of Ghana.”
The statement emphasized the NDC’s accountability for the regrettable incident, reinforcing its stance against any form of violence and highlighting its resolve to uphold the principles of democracy and media freedom in the country.
