The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned a physical assault on Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party, by a fellow regional party officer.
The incident resulted in Yakubu receiving medical treatment.
The party, through a statement issued by Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary, expressed deep disappointment and assured its members and the public the matter would be thoroughly addressed at the next Functional Executive Committee meeting.
“We take a very serious view of the conduct of the party officer responsible for the assault.”
“Measures will be taken to address the matter thoroughly to leave no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party does not approve of unlawful acts of assault and battery,” stated Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.
Contrary to some reports, the NDC clarified that no national executive member of the party was present at the meeting where the assault occurred.
The meeting was convened to discuss campaign strategy and was unrelated to reconciliation, accounts, or any allied matters.
“The NDC wants to place on record its determination to ensure that all its members adhere strictly to the long-cherished practices that have made our internal politics the enviable attraction of teeming millions of the people of Ghana,” the statement read.
The party emphasized its commitment to upholding the values that have garnered the confidence of the Ghanaian people, positioning itself as the next government in waiting.
