The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations about what the party described as, an act of human rights violations, criminal persecutions and harassment against supporters by President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo led NPP Government.
This was made known at a press conference in Accra addressed by the General Secretary, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
Among instance of human rights violations, harassment and criminal persecutions against members include the Republic vrs Stephen Kwabena Opuni and two others.
Again, The Republic vrs Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and Anthony Kwaku Boahen which he described it as a criminal persecution perpetrated by the NPP Government against them.
The other political motivated persecution he mentioned is The Republic vrs Cassiel Ato Forson and two others which he averred, is engineered to weaken his position to the E-levy.
According to Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the actions of Government is creating conditions that threatened Ghana’s political stability and further erode the country’s democratic values.
The NDC petition request the Secretary General of Commonwealth of Nations to closely follow the political and human rights situation in Ghana adding that, the promotion and protection of human rights, democracy, and fundamental freedom is a core value of the Commonwealth.
Again, the party requests the Secretary General of Commonwealth of Nations to send a team to investigate matters raised, and in particular, send a team of lawyers, judges and legal experts to assess the adequacy and quality of the justice administered to members of the NDC who are facing criminal persecutions.
The NDC also wants Commonwealth to continue to engage with the Government of Ghana and support and encourage the pursuit of accountability for the perpetrators of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency bye-election violence and the gruesome state-sponsored killing of eight (8) innocent Ghanaians during the 7th December,2020 general elections.
Furthermore, monitor the human rights situation in Ghana and the criminal persecutions of members of the NDC.
NDC in the petition also request that, Commonwealth engaged with a broad range of actors, including government officials, political parties, representatives of civil society, to respect, promote and protect human rights in Ghana.
The party however, call upon President Akufo Addo and the NPP Government to put a stop to the persecution, harassments, threats and killings of supporters and members of the NDC.
Ghana became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1957 under the leadership of President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President.
Since then, Ghana has been an active member of the Commonwealth of Nations committed to its ideas and values.
