The Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has argued that the Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, should have resigned from his position upon declaring his intention to contest in the parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He emphasized that civil servants engaging openly in politics undermine the integrity of their offices.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points, Edudzi Tamakloe stated, “He needs commonsense that his function is so critical and should have resigned.”

“I expected him to have demonstrated self-restraint to resign… if you have civil servants overtly doing politics, it undermines the office that they hold.”

Another legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, advised Kwaning-Bosompem to seek proper legal opinion on the appointment of civil servants in Ghana.

Kpebu challenged Kwaning-Bosompem’s reliance on Article 195 of the constitution, stating that it reflects a lack of understanding of the law.

“Article 195 is for all offices in public service, including the janitors, who are all appointed based on 195. But the difference is that because they are junior officers, the president doesn’t sign their letters.”

“So if he says he was appointed under 195, he has said absolutely nothing; he should tread cautiously,” Kpebu argued.

Kpebu also urged the public to continue pressuring the Controller and Accountant General to resign to be able to pursue his political career.

He cautioned against accepting excuses related to legal proceedings and stressed the importance of maintaining public pressure for the Controller’s resignation.
