Newmont Ghana Limited has provided strong assurances to residents living within its operational areas and the broader Ghanaian community about its unwavering commitment to upholding high environmental standards in its mining operations.

Samuel Osei, the Communications and External Relations Manager of the mining giant in Ahafo, emphasized that Newmont Ghana’s operations adhere to internationally accepted practices.

Speaking during a media tour of the proposed Newmont Ahafo North Mine construction site in Techire, Ahafo Region, Osei highlighted the comprehensive preparations made by the company for the commencement of mining operations, slated for late 2024.

These preparations encompass the rigorous enforcement of environmental measures to continually monitor and mitigate noise, air, dust, and water pollution.

In addressing the impact of the project on the local communities, Osei pointed to job creation as a significant economic contribution to the catchment areas. Newmont Ghana is projected to create approximately 1,800 jobs during the construction phase and provide 550 direct employment opportunities during the operational phase.

Furthermore, Osei disclosed the company’s collaboration with stakeholders on the Alternative Livelihood Training Programme, which has provided vocational and technical skills training to local individuals affected by their operations.

Regarding concerns from farmers affected by land acquisition for the project, Osei emphasized the company’s commitment to dialogue in resolving these issues, assuring that Newmont has not infringed upon the rights of farmers who have chosen not to release their lands.

The media tour aimed to grant journalists access to the construction site of Newmont Ghana’s latest venture, a project exceeding US$1.2 billion, marking the company’s third major mining investment in the country, following the Ahafo South and Akyem mines. The new mine is expected to yield an annual gold production of 275,000 to 325,000 ounces over an estimated 13-year mine life.

“Our dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable community development underscores our commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen in Ghana,” he stated.
