Some prominent Ghanaian individuals under the name Concerned Mobile Network Subscribers have called on Ghanaians to boycott all mobile network services on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.
The call forms part of a series of demonstrations against the continuing SIM card re-registration process, which the group labelled as both illegal and inhumane.
The #NoCallsDay campaign is to run from 6:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesday and is expected to attract over 7,000 mobile network subscribers who have signed an online petition against the registration process.
According to the Concerned Subscribers, any attempt to impose the SIM card re-registration on subscribers or to block their lines would be an infringement on their property rights.
The group noted that following the failure of the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to address concerns associated with the legality and chaotic SIM-Re-registration Exercise, the Concerned Mobile Network Subscribers, and the over 7,000 online petitioners want Ghanaians to join the #NoCallsDay boycott tomorrow.
“We, the undersigned Concerned Mobile Network Subscribers, and the over 7,000 online petitioners call on our fellow countrymen and women to join our campaign for a #NoCallsDay boycott of the MNOs on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, following the failure of the National Communications Authority (NCA) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to address concerns associated with the legality and chaotic SIM-Re-registration Exercise.”
“On Tuesday, we are urging Ghanaians and all mobile network users within Ghana not to make or receive calls, or engage in any other mobile network activity, from 6:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.,” according to a press statement dated February 6,” the statement said.
The demands of the group include calls on the NCA to immediately withdraw its directive for mobile network customers to re-register their SIM cards by 31st March, 2022.
Calls for an appropriate legal framework to be in place for any directives for SIM re-registration to happen.
Demand for the NCA and MNOs to come up with a better and innovative way of re-registering the SIM cards without the current chaotic and inhumane re-registration process being witnessing up and down the country.
And call on the NCA to direct the MNOs to stop using private phones of employees to collect subscribers’ biometric data.
