National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made a scathing bribe allegation against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Sammy Gyamfi claims the NPP attempted to bribe the Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson, not to contest the by-election.
He indicated that when the bribery attempt failed, they resorted to threatening him with imprisonment.
Sammy Gyamfi praised Quayson for his unwavering commitment to his constituents and the NDC in a Facebook post.
In his post, Gyamfi commended Quayson, stating, “Folks, not much has been said about the relentlessness of the MP-elect for Assin North, without which victory may have eluded us.”
He described Quayson as calm, confident, humble, courageous, sober, inspiring, meek, and fearless. Gyamfi called on all Ghanaians to emulate Quayson’s characteristics in their daily lives, emphasizing his personal conviction and determination to fight for justice.
James Gyakye Quayson, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), emerged victorious in the keenly contested Assin North constituency by-election.
James Quayson received 17,245 votes, representing 57.56% of the valid votes, according to officials of the Electoral Commission.
His main rival, Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party, secured 12,630 votes or 42.15% of the valid votes.
Despite his electoral success, Quayson is facing criminal charges brought against him by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for allegedly failing to renounce his dual citizenship status before filing to contest the 2022 parliamentary elections.
Quayson has filed a motion on notice at the High Court for a stay of proceedings, pending an appeal.
