The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to hold its parliamentary primaries in constituencies with Incumbent Members of Parliament and in the Northern region, several sitting MPs are facing stiff competition from challengers.

Some of the key races to watch are Yendi, where Farouk Aliu Mahama, son of former Vice President Aliu Mahama, is vying for the seat, and Bimbilla, where Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul is seeking re-election.

In Bimbilla, Nitiwul’s main rival is Alhaji Nuhu Razuk, who has accused the constituency executives of being biased and putting pressure on delegates to support the incumbent.

Razuk has appealed to the regional and national executives to intervene and ensure a level playing field.

Nitiwul, on the other hand, has the backing of the Municipal Chief Executive, Abdulai Yaqoub, who praised his achievements and urged voters to retain him.

In Yendi, Hajia Abibata Saani, the CEO of Masloc, has re-joined the race after withdrawing earlier.

She said she wanted to offer better representation to the people of Yendi and asked for their support.

She also reached out to her opponent, Farouk Aliu Mahama, and the party, reminding them of her loyalty and contributions.

The Elections Committee has advised the aspirants to be mindful of their messages and avoid any negative campaigning, as they are all members of the same party.

The results of these primaries will determine the NPP’s chances of winning or retaining these strategic constituencies in the 2024 general elections.
