Commissioner of Police (COP) George Alex Mensah (Rtd), an aspiring parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bekwai Constituency, has denied allegations he accused Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of orchestrating bribery to influence the outcome of the January 27 parliamentary primaries.
In response to an online news portal’s publication, COP Mensah (Rtd) dismissed the allegations as a malicious and deceitful attempt to sow discord between himself and the Vice President in the lead-up to the upcoming contest.
He clarified the sequence of events involving a police vehicle and the allegations surrounding a purported special exercise.
In a statement, COP Mensah (Rtd) explained, “The fact is that a police vehicle with registration number GE 7243-19 was released from the Police Headquarters and sent to Bekwai constituency for a so-called special exercise.
He disclosed that Inspector Kwakye, the IGP’s driver, and Nana Osei Afrifa met with delegates at the Alpha Guest House, where Afrifa, purportedly representing the Vice President, conveyed the desire to collaborate with a younger, ICT-inclined candidate.
“I therefore, want to state categorically that I have never mentioned anywhere that the vice president sent the driver of IGP Dampare to Bekwai to bribe delegates,” asserted COP Mensah (Rtd).
The claim, he said, was made by Nana Osei Afrifa, who allegedly arrived in Bekwai with Inspector Kwakye during the vetting of aspirants under the guise of a special exercise.
COP Mensah (Rtd) urged caution against targeting him and emphasized the need to include Inspector Kwakye and Nana Osei Afrifa in the unfolding issue.
