On Sunday, September 17th, 2023, two activists affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) found themselves in police custody after being accused of orchestrating a pre-dawn attack on applicants at a registration center in Abofu.
The individuals in question, Leroy Nii Taboulsi, the assembly member for Abofu, and Patrick Awuku, the assembly member for Woyeman, along with several others, allegedly targeted applicants, robbing them of their mobile phones and cash.
Fortune did not favour them, however, as concerned citizens were alerted to the incident and swiftly arrived at the scene, causing the assailants to flee.
However, Taboulsi and Awuku’s escape was short-lived, and they were apprehended and subsequently taken to the Tesano police station.
According to sources, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives in Okaikoi North had devised a strategy to expedite their members’ registration during the limited registration process. To implement this strategy, they opted to stay overnight at the center to secure their positions in the registration queue.
Unfortunately, around 5:00 a.m., as Muslim members of the group congregated for their morning prayers, a group of armed individuals reportedly brandishing cutlasses stormed the center.
Allegedly, they threatened applicants and proceeded to relieve them of their mobile phones and personal belongings.
Upon learning of the unfolding events, concerned citizens rushed to the scene, causing the assailants to retreat. However, Patrick Awuku and Leroy Nii Taboulsi were arrested and turned over to the police.
Both individuals have vehemently denied any involvement in the incident, asserting that they were falsely identified as part of the group of assailants by NDC members.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Okaikoi Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has successfully secured bail for Taboulsi and Awuku, pending ongoing police investigations.
