The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly has resolved to plant some ten thousand seedlings as part of the government’s green Ghana project.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Boye Laryea, the gesture under the initiative One Tree One Student/Pupil will go a long way to combat the effects of climate change as well as build a resilient city.
Delivering his speech at a ceremony to mark this year’s Green Ghana day in Accra, the Okaikwei North MCE urged Ghanaians to take part in the project.
“Trees help prevent flooding by reducing rainfall run of, this allows the water to flow slowly down into the earth below the trees roots. I therefore encourage all and sundry to participate in this year’s Green Ghana to plant and nurture at least one tree starting today.”
Mr. Laryea indicated that trees have a wide range of uses for mankind while restoring the carbon level and releasing the oxygen back into the air.
Mrs. Dorcas Asiamah in a message read on behalf of the Deputy Regional Forestry Manager said out of the twenty million trees to be planted, the Greater Accra Regional Forest Service Division has been given 2.5 million trees/fruits as a target to plant.
She said “our main concern is about nurturing of the planted seedlings. The seedlings can only survive if we nurture them well by watering them, providing cages around them, weeding around them and mulchimg them to enhance their growth.”
Mrs. Asiamah noted that trees are very important the treason, they must be nurtured to maturity to protect current and future generations.
“We would like to entreat the Municipal Assemblies to monitor trees planted in their jurisdictions to ensure survival” he said.
Mr. Laryea, Mr Benjamin Armah, the Municipal Coordinator, the Abeka Chief, Achimota Chief, Head of Departments’ among others planted trees to mark the day.
Later Mr. Laryea, among others personalities again planted trees at the Achimota District Court and the Assembly’s new site currently under construction at Achimota.
On the theme, “Mobilizing for a Greener Future”, the government aims at using the Green Ghana Day to plant 20 million trees across the country with a regional target of 1.2 million trees.
The initiative seeks to create an enhanced national awareness of the necessity for collective action towards the afforestation and restoration of degraded landscape in the country, Inculcate in the youth the value of planting and nurturing trees and their associated benefits, enhance livelihoods towards communities through engagement in the production of tree seedlings, and to beautify the environment.
