ONMA MCE Strikes; Vows To Sanitize Commercial Activities In Municipality

Mr. Boye Laryea, the Okaikwei North Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has rolled out plans to sanitize the operations of commercial activities in the municipality.

The exercise, which covers a wide range of business activities is part of efforts to restore sanity in the Municipality.

“We can’t be doing the same thing all the time and expect new results; we have to put certain measures in place and this begins this X’ Mas” Mr. Laryea noted during a stakeholder- meeting in Accra yesterday.

He stated that effective January 1, 2022, stopping, dropping of passengers and goods by all drivers at the Naa Densua Temporal Stop at Achimota a suburb in the municipality will be an offence that will attractive a fine of not less than GH¢1,000 adding that only ‘Ayalolo’ vehicles are exempted from the directive.

The Okaikwei North MCE disclosed that trading activities by hawkers on the George Walker Bush Highway (N1) is also banned while jaywalking across the highway and scaling the median on the Highway apart from using the foot bridge is an offence.

He noted that the creeping practice of auto mechanic (fitting shops) springing up on various roads in the Municipality will decisively be dealt with.

While stressing the closure of the Abofu Section of the N1 Highway, Mr. Laryea further noted that the car Washing Bay near the Tesano Basest Church is an illegal business.

“It’s illegal to send your car there for washing, we will arrest and prosecute both the operators and customers who bring their cars there for washing. Please send your car to a proper washing bay, that one is unauthorized…” he argued.

Mr. Laryea further indicated that the Assembly will not spare any vehicle parked on road reservations, pavements and walkways at Akweteyman and Apenkwa along the Highways since that constitutes another breach of the law.

DSP Comfort Forkah, Commander of the Tesano Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, lauded the initiative of the Assembly indicating that the issues as outlined by the MCE are all backed by law.

She said her Unit is committed to assisting the Assembly in order to execute its plans contending that “this exercise is not for the Assembly alone.”

DSP Forkah stated that all stakeholders must help the assembly to be the model that others will emulate urging the MCE to consider fencing the median of the N1 to prevent people from crossing at unauthorized sections of the road.

She explained that lots of lives have been lost at the Naa Densua Temporal Stop.

The Tesano MTTD Commander stated that the police administration also has put in place measures to ensure accident free Xmas.  

Present at the stakeholder-meeting where Assembly Members, members of the Achimota Drivers Union, representatives of the Road Ministry among others.
