Parliament was compelled to take an early adjournment on Tuesday, 27th June 2023 because most of the members were absent from the day’s sitting.
The majority of MPs are currently in Assin North to offer support to their various political parties.
The by-election is a make-or-break for both the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
A win for the NPP will give the party a very slim but welcome majority that it requires in the House, regardless of how small.
A win for the NDC will, however, mean the House will continue to be split between the two parties with the independent MP holding the trump card.
Majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu who moved the motion for adjournment indicated there is an important activity taking place outside the precinct of Parliament and a lot of the MPs are deeply involved in that enterprise.
“Giving the circumstance of today, I want to move for an adjournment until Thursday 29th June 2023,” he said.
The Assin North by-election followed the annulment of the 2020 election of James Gyakye Quayson as MP for the constituency by the Supreme Court.
According to the ruling of the Court, Mr. Quayson did not qualify to contest the election because he held Canadian citizenship at the time of his election as MP for Assin North.
